Task 20 - Evaluation Question: 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions from real media?

In the video above I answer the first evaluation question, I tried answering this question as best I could without trying to be repetitive or go off on a tangent.

Our main inspiration for our opening sequence was Cloverfield, a mystery/horror. We watched the trailer for this and we decided to use a similar camera angle - Point Of View, much like the trailer, also in the trailer, they played the clip in reverse and gave the effect of a rewind. We really liked this edit so we incorporated it in our opening sequence, it can be seen right after our protagonist walks away from the "dying" male.

Also, we watched the opening sequence for "Se7en" and they used an effective way to hook the audience by including no dialogue therefore making the opening that much more mysterious. We tried using this in our film by taking out the audio in most of our scenes apart from the "Abuse" scene where we had to include dialogue because it wouldn't make any sense to just have a scene where its a door.

Furthermore, we used a location where it normally looks isolated and "lonely" this is normally used in most thriller films and dramas to add suspense to their story or scene. Moreover, the lighting in the the different locations symbolised different moods and feelings of the protagonist. For example, the couple walking past Cara, had natural lighting a bit like high-key lighting but with a natural light source. Also in the house , there is low-key lighting especially when Cara walks down the stairs, ideally I wanted to use chiaroscuro lighting but we didn't have access to any equipment/tools that wold allow us to create this and also we didn't have any knowledge as to how to do this. "Se7en" is a great example of this chiaroscuro lighting we wanted to emulate.
